Why it matters

A variant file can retain substantial identifying and inference value even though it is smaller than raw sequencing output.

An export still needs an access decision

A variant file can be easier to move and reuse than a larger set of sequencing outputs. That convenience does not establish that unrestricted sharing is appropriate. Review the sample fields, identifiers, and intended use before treating an export as routine.

For provenance, connect the variants to the reference and calling process used to produce them. If a later analysis produces different results, that context helps explain what changed. Avoid assuming that two files describe identical evidence simply because they use the same format.
