Why it matters

Additional factors can reduce reliance on a password alone. Their usefulness depends on the method, account recovery, and whether every relevant access path actually requires them.

A practical example

Imagine someone learns a reused password from a different service. A second factor may prevent that password alone from opening a genomics account, while a weak recovery process could still leave another route to access.

An important distinction

Two passwords are not two different factor categories. MFA also does not prevent every compromise or limit what a successfully authenticated account may do. It works alongside permissions, monitoring, and secure recovery procedures.
