Why it matters
Removing a name can reduce exposure while leaving other routes to identification. Genomic information deserves special attention because comparisons with relatives or other datasets may reveal connections that ordinary identifier removal does not address.
A practical example
Suppose a research export removes names but retains detailed genetic markers and demographic fields. A sensible assessment considers the combination of fields and available comparison data, rather than treating the missing name as the end of the analysis.
An important distinction
De-identification describes a process and its context, not a guarantee of zero risk. Legal definitions may differ. State what was removed, what remained, and what sharing conditions apply.
